What is SAP ?

SAP AG founded in 1972 by 5 formers IBM employees is the largest software development enterprise in in the world. The second rank is Oracle (which in 2004 acquired PeopleSoft and JDEdwards) according to http://www.softwaretop100.org/. Microsoft is only on the 5th rank. There are 5 enterprise applications in SAP's Business Suite :
1. ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning)
2. CRM (Customer Relationship Management)
3. PLM (Product Lifecycle Management)
4. SCM (Supply Chain Management)
5. SRM (Supplier Relationship Management)

In its original language, SAP = Systeme, Anwendungen und Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung or Systems, Applications and Products in dataprocessing. SAP ERP has many versions released. The major change was from R2 (mainframe) to R3 (3-tier architecture, database-application-client) in 1992. As new concept of SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) emerged, SAP ERP landscape moved to web services based business activities with its SAP Netweaver platform technology which accomodate non-SAP solutions.
